Cat Yen is our Thailand editor - New Mandala

Dear New Mandala readers,

I’m very pleased to let you know that Catherine (or Cat) Yen is joining New Mandala as our dedicated Thailand editor.

Cat is in the final year of her Bachelor of Philosophy in Asian Studies at the ANU. She’s currently conducting research for her honours thesis on Thailand’s police, and is well on the road to a PhD specialising in Thai politics and a research career.

Cat’s just returned to the ANU after a two-year stint in Thailand as a New Colombo Plan scholar, where she studied at Thammasat University and worked as a reporter at Prachatai. She’s also a long-serving copy editor at our fellow ANU-based blog East Asia Forum. You’ll hear more from her in the coming days about the approach she’ll be taking to New Mandala’s coverage of Thailand.

Coming up to four years since the 2014 coup, there is a growing sense that the status quo in Thailand isn’t sustainable. Election or no election, something is going to happen, and with Cat’s expertise and networks feeding into our Thailand coverage, New Mandala will be able to bring you fresh perspectives on the interplay between Thailand’s day-to-day political contestation and deeper issues of history, culture, economics and more.

As always, we welcome submissions of thoughtful and original perspectives on Thailand. You can contact Cat directly with material for consideration at catherine.yen@anu.edu.au.
