The 84-year-old Farrakhan is the head of the Nation of Islam, a group that helped organize the Million Man March and has emphasized assisting black communities. But Farrakhan himself is a virulent anti-Semite, repeatedly blaming Jews for the ills of the world, and his leadership has led the Southern Poverty Law Center to label the Nation of Islam a hate group. Last month, Women’s March co-chair Tamika Mallory sat through a speech in which Farrakhan said Jews were “responsible for all of this filth and degenerate behavior that Hollywood is putting out turning men into women and women into men.” CNN’s Jake Tapper put out a series of tweets condemning Farrakhan and asking if Mallory would do the same. She issued a statement denouncing anti-Semitism, homophobia, and transphobia, but didn’t go so far as to call out Farrakhan specifically. The Women’s March group had a slightly more forceful denunciation of Farrakhan’s remarks, and added, “Our external silence has been because we are holding these conversations and trying to intentionally break the cycles that pit our communities against each other.” Over the last seven days, “Women’s March + Leader” has a 29 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
