Amazon Prime Wardrobe Review by Antonio Centeno - RMRS

The Amazon Prime wardrobe service…  a good deal or a waste of your money?

If you haven’t heard about this – Amazon’s letting you try clothes AFTER you buy, but BEFORE you pay.

You buy up to eight items, have them delivered, and pay nothing for seven days.

Try it all on and return anything you don’t like.

Sound a bit too good to be true? A little complicated?

Don’t worry… I’ve checked it out so you can make an informed decision.

I went for shoes. I ended up returning all eight pairs, but four were decent shoes that I would have kept if I needed them.

Overall I was pretty impressed. Read on to find out why… and which of these eight shoes got my vote.

#1. Kenneth Cole REACTION Men’s Reason Oxford Price: $120 kenneth cole reaction mens reason oxford

I KNOW you shoe guys out there have spotted an issue… this is not an Oxford.

Oxfords have a closed lacing system – the vamp (the front part) is sewn on top of the quarters (the part with the eyelets.) It looks smooth and sleek. When you lace up the shoe, the two edges fit neatly together without a gap – that’s why it’s called closed lacing.

I’d say this shoe is actually a blucher. It’s got an open lacing system – the vamp goes underneath the quarters. Those are the decorative leather tabs where the eyelets are.

On a dress shoe, more decoration = LESS formality. So open lacing is a less formal style.

It’s common in the United States for a shoe with open lacing to be called an Oxford. In fact, ALL the ‘Oxford’s I’m going to show you today have open lacing.  But if you’re looking for a shoe to wear with a formal suit, skip these and find yourself one with closed lacing.

Lacing aside, what did I think of this shoe? Honestly – I wouldn’t spend $120 on it. The build is decent for the price but it doesn’t feel like it’s going to last too long, and the overall look is a bit off.

The stitching looks fun, but the leather feels a little plasticky. They’re calling the color ‘cognac’, which is a light amber brown, but it just looks brown. Maybe if they’d sold it as a brown blucher I’d be more enthused.

Would I keep it? No

#2. Bostonian Maxton Plain Oxford Price: $100 bostonian maxton plain oxford

This is a very different shoe from the Kenneth Cole. It’s much more casual, the quality of the build is higher, they’ve paid attention to detail and they’ve made it fun.

Double stitching isn’t always a sign of quality, but they’ve added it here because they wanted to bring in a contrast stitch. They’ve also added broguing. These details make it a more casual shoe.

I think this is a perfectly fine shoe for $100 – you could easily get a couple hundred wears out of these. Would I keep it? No #3. Steve Madden Bozlee Oxford Price: $90 steve madden bozlee oxford

As you can see, this is a much less casual shoe than the Bostonian.

The darker color, the non-contrast stitching, and the sleek design all make it simpler, less decorative – and MORE formal.

For $90 these are quite well constructed. The rubber sole has some nice traction – again, they didn’t go for any contrast between the sole and the upper, which makes it look more formal.

Overall I think these are perfectly fine and a decent looking shoe.

Would I keep it? No #4. Florsheim Spark Cap Toe Oxford Price: $120 florsheim spark cap toe oxford

I like the attention to detail here. They did a pretty good job on the stitching and the overall build quality.

This shoe looks like it’s made to be a bit dressier but the color makes it more casual. Another detail that makes it more casual is the extra vertical seam on the inner side of the shoe – they actually make this with two pieces of material.

$120 is on the high end of what I’d expect to pay for something like this, but the build quality is good and you could probably get 200 wears out of them.

These shoes are versatile – you could wear them with jeans, chinos, dress slacks, or maybe a casual suit.

I think this is a great all-purpose shoe. It seems like it could stand up to inclement weather. I like the overall look and the color and I could see myself using it for everyday wear.

Would I keep it? Yes #5. Stacy Adams Dickinson Cap Toe Oxford Price: $75 stacy adams dickinson captoe oxford

Click here to grab this shoe from my Amazon store.

Overall I like the look of this shoe. Something to be careful of – they call this color cognac, but compare that with the Kenneth Cole shoe that’s also supposed to be cognac. One company’s idea of cognac is not the other’s.

I like this color a lot more. To me it makes a huge difference to get the right color.

That’s why I think this service is good – you can get the same color in different brands and actually try it out.

The upper feels good, and the stitching looks fine – they use single stitching throughout, which is more formal. The build quality of the sole is quite high – they’ve actually stacked the leather.

I also prefer the sleek toe box on these. Some of the other shoes I showed you have a higher toe box in the front that makes the shoe more casual. These have a nice sleek design, and for just 75 bucks I definitely would spend money on these.

Would I keep it? Yes #6. Zanzara Hartung Oxford Price: $210 amazon prime wardrobe zanzara hartung oxford

Click here to grab this shoe from my Amazon store.

See all the holes on the toe of this one? That’s perforated leather – designed to make it a very breathable summer shoe.

With the lighter color and the overall build, this is a more casual shoe  – but you can still dress nice during the summer and be cool wearing this. It’s a great unique design, very light, and feels like a quality build.

It’s double the price of a lot of the other shoes I’m talking about, but the feel of the leather says it’s a pretty good deal.

If you’re in a hot area, I’d say yes – go for it. Would I keep it? Yes #7. Stacy Adams Slocomb Cap Toe Double Monk Price: $85 stacy adams slocomb captoe double monk

Click here to grab this shoe from my Amazon store.

I thought the Stacy Adams Oxfords were a great deal so I wanted to try something a bit different – a cap toe double monk with a bit of suede.

At $85 these are a little bit pricier than the other ones I showed you from Stacy Adams, but I thought both pairs were an amazing deal for the money. Be aware that the build quality isn’t the greatest – it’s got a glued-on rubber sole, so you can’t get it resoled – but the uppers look really nice.

For a few seasons during the fall, maybe during the spring, or even during the summer, you could pull these off.

If you want to add a bit of style to your wardrobe, these are shoes that punch above their weight. Would I keep it? Yes #8.  Nunn Bush Penny Loafer Price: $67 nunn bush penny loafer

Click here to grab this shoe from my Amazon store.

Probably the first thing you notice here is that it’s a square shoe. That’s because of the silhouette – notice how the toe box goes straight up. This is not really my style – I prefer my penny loafers with a  sleeker silhouette in the front.

Overall I was impressed with the build quality for the price point of $67.  You can see where they ran the nails right into the heel, which is a good sign. It’s a very simple shoe, but you may find this works for you.

Would I keep it? No

So what’s my final thought on the Amazon Prime wardrobe service?

I like it.

You get a thousand dollars of shoes delivered to your door, you get to try them on, and within seven days, if you return them, you are charged absolutely nothing. That’s a pretty good service.

One thing, though – I’d like them to have a wider range of different items. Their range of shoes is good, but they didn’t have a lot of the less expensive shoes.

If you want to grab any of the shoes I’ve talked about, and see some other styles I recommend, take a look at all the stylish dress shoes in my Amazon store.

And yes – I do get paid when you buy from there. I’m an affiliate of Amazon. Click here to check out my men’s style recs at the Real Men Real Style Amazon store.
