Salmonella contamination has caused a major recall across 8 states

Your fruit salad may be trying to kill you. That's right, folks — brace yourselves for news of yet another recall caused by a salmonella contamination that's getting people sick across the country.

Caito Foods of Indianapolis, Indiana, is recalling precut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fresh-cut fruit medley containers that have been exposed to salmonella adelaide.

The fresh-cut fruits were sold in clear plastic clamshell containers at Costco, JayC, Kroger, Pay Less Super Markets, Owen’s Market, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon. They were distributed to eight states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

So far, more than 60 people have fallen ill after eating these products, and 31 have required hospitalization, though this number may grow — the Centers for Disease Control estimates that it can take two to four weeks for them to receive information on illnesses related to the recall. The youngest victim was less than 1 year old, while the oldest was 97. Thankfully, no one has died, though the very young and very old are especially susceptible to having a severe reaction to the infection.

The most common symptoms people experience if they've been exposed to salmonella are diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. It can last for four to seven days and in extreme cases can lead to hospitalization and death. If you experience any of these symptoms and have eaten precut melon in any of the states included in the recall, head to the doctor's office.

Summer without melon is just too sad to contemplate, and luckily, the recall only applies to the precut melon sold in the stores listed. That means you can still buy a whole melon and cut it up yourself if you want something fruity and refreshing to sustain you when it gets hot outside.
