Tarantino Is What Star Trek Needs Declares Karl Urban

Is Quentin Tarantino what the Star Trek franchise needs right now? One franchise cast member thinks so. Though Tarantino is currently prepping his next movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the filmmaker is also getting set to tackle an R-rated Star Trek Movie, which at least one dude is very excited for. While promoting his new cop thriller Bent, Karl Urban says he has no clue what Quentin Tarantino is planning with this unique new take on Star Trek, but he does think that the filmmaker's brand of filmmaking is just what the franchise needs.

"I know nothing more than you guys do! My personal belief is that he's probably the exact kind of energy the franchise needs."

While there has been no indication as to when production may begin, Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) is currently working on the script, making this the first movie that Tarantino will direct that he didn't also write the script for, if he so chooses to actually direct it. It's possible that Tarantino will rewrite the draft himself and get writing credit, but it would still mark the first time he's shared a writing credit in quite some time, since Pulp Fiction, the Oscar-winning script he co-wrote with Roger Avary. While Karl Urban doesn't know what QT may bring to the storied Star Trek franchise, the actor says he remains open to any possibilities the director may bring.

"It's just important to remain open to whatever the story is, and whatever collaboration may evolve. Whether that's going to mean swearing, more graphic violence or sex, I don't know. It'll be interesting to see."

Many have criticized Paramount for moving forward with this project, and it still remains to be seen how this will affect the previously-announced Star Trek 4. Paramount announced in July 2016 that Star Trek 4 is happening, confirming that Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role from the 2009 Star Trek movie as George Kirk, the late father of James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine). It was revealed that James Kirk will finally meet his father for the first time, and while no specific story details were given, since George Kirk died on the day James was born, there will have to be time travel elements involved.

Now that Paramount is moving forward with Tarantino's Star Trek, the fate of Star Trek 4 remains uncertain. Zachary Quinto revealed last year that the Star Trek 4 script wasn't even finished yet, while cautioning in another interview that he wasn't even sure if the movie would happen. Chris Hemsworth even cast doubt on his involvement in January, revealing in an interview he isn't sure if he's even in the movie at this point in time. Tarantino is slated to film Once Upon a Time In Hollywood this summer, which has an August 9, 2019 release date, with the date also marking the 50th Anniversary of the Manson Family's murder of Sharon Tate.
